Transformers Universe Decepticon

Megatron

Allegiance: Decepticon

Function: Decepticon Leader

First Comic Appearance: Transformers #1

"Everything is fodder."

Profile: Love, compassion, mercy are words that have no meaning for Megatron. He has risen to the leadership of the Decepticons by a combination of brute strength, military cunning, ruthlessness, and terror. On Cybertron he was commanding general in charge of all military operations against the Autobots, who referred to him as "The Slag-Maker." It was a title of fear. A title of respect. A title Megatron relished. His banishment to Earth has only made him more bitter and more evil-minded, if that is possible. He aches to return to Cybertron and complete his mission of eradicating the Autobots. But while on Earth he is dedicated to eliminating those Autobots marooned here with him- and his plans go far beyond that. He realizes the Earth is one huge stockpile of metal and fuel resources and means to possess it all, with the aid of his fellow Decepticons. But his plans go even further, plans so grandiose even his fellow Decepticons are unaware: Megatron intends to enslave the entire human race. He allows no exceptions to his motto.

Abilities: Megatron is incredibly powerful and intelligent, the equal of Autobot Leader Optimus Prime. His fusion cannon can convert any small amount of matter into large quantities of explosive nuclear energy. The cannon can fire a blast up to 12 miles and release enough energy to flatten a small town. Megatron can use his internal circuitry to connect the cannon interdimensionally with a black hole, where it can draw on anti-matter as its power source. The blast from this is far greater, but it creates a tremendous strain on Megatron to do this for even one blast.

Weaknesses: Megatron has no known weaknesses.

Megatron is the leader of the Decepticons in the cartoon continuity up to 2005. In the comic continuities, he was the original leader and founder of the Decepticons, and though he was usurped several times, he managed to survive everything to once again lead the Decepticons by the end of the existing US comic storyline.

Cartoon Bio (US):

Megatron was created by what appeared to be the Constructicons before the Cybertronian Civil War began. Created to lead the Decepticons to victory, he performed his job effectively, wiping out most Autobot resistance easily. For many years, Optimus Prime was considered his equal, and Megatron jumped at the chance to destroy him during his journey in the Ark. During the fight, however, the Ark was damaged and sent crashing into the Earth, where the two armies lay dormant for 4 million years. After being reactived, Megatron concentrated his plans on capturing the comparitively vast energies of the planet Earth.

In 2005, in an attempt to neutralize the Autobot threat before they could fully utilize their Autobot Moonbases, Megatron ordered a full-scale assault on Autobot City. In the end, the Decepticons were driven off, but not before they nearly destroyed the city and Megatron killed Optimus Prime. Himself brutally damaged, Megatron was carried to the escape shuttle by Soundwave. Starscream, in a thinly-disguised attempt to take leadership of the Decepticons, jettisoned Megatron into deep space.

Unicron, on his way to Cybertron, caught up with Megatron and offered him a new body in return for the destruction of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Reluctantly, Megatron agreed, and was transformed into Galvatron. Shortly thereafter, he killed Starscream and pursued the remaining Autobots. He took the Matrix from Ultra Magnus and tried to use it against Unicron. Unable to release its power, Galvatron was swallowed.

Hot Rod later entered Unicron's body during an enormous battle around Cybertron, and engaged Galvatron in a fight. At Hot Rod's touch, the Matrix rejected Galvatron forcefully and changed Hot Rod into Rodimus Prime, who promptly threw Galvatron out of Unicron.

Galvatron was eventually discovered by Cyclonus in a lava pit. The heat apparently damaged his circuits, because Galvatron acted as if driven insane. Some sanity returned to him eventually, but he was never totally stable again. He was last seen in Scorponok, spinning out of control in space.

Beast Wars Addendum:

Knowing that transwarp technology was being developed on Cybertron, and that it was capable of moving through both space and time, Megatron encoded a message onto the Golden Disk aboard a Voyager probe. In the message, he acknowledged the possibility of losing the war, and that future generations of Decepticons should use the information on the disk (as well as the transwarp technology) to help win the war.

Comic Bio (US):

Megatron led the Decepticons to start the Cybertronian Civil War. Decimating Autobots by the millions, he earned a reputation as an extremely ruthless leader. Megatron attacked the Ark immediately after the Autobots on board expended most of their energy on clearing a path through an asteroid field (presumably in the Sol system). Knowing he could not win, Optimus Prime sent the Ark plummeting to the Earth.

In the latter part of the 20th century, a volcanic eruption caused the factions to awaken and renew their conflict. Megatron intuitively realized the potential of the planet and tried to force Sparkplug Witwicky to convert Earth fuel into a form Transformers could use. During a battle with the Autobots, Megatron discovered that the fuel was poisonous, and would have been defeated had it not been for the intervention of Shockwave.

As a result, Shockwave took the leadership of the Decepticons from Megatron. Megatron fought to regain it, but he was still badly injured from the poison and was soundly defeated. In breaking a deal made with the Autobot Ratchet, Megatron had to battle both him and the newly-reawakened Dinobots. Neither was capable of beating him, but the fight weakened the cliff Megatron was standing on. He plummeted, but was able to transform to his lighter gun mode and disappeared in a mound of snow.

He eventually reappeared after a man found him and used him in a series of robberies. After being tossed to the ground, Megatron was able to reactivate his conscious thought processes. He informed the man that he respected his audacity and courage, and left him to return to the Decepticons. During his journey, he ate a truckfull of coal, which caused his systems to lock up. Soundwave and his cassettes rescued him, and the Decepticons made the coal mine their temporary base of operations.

After the Autobots successfully stole the secret of gestalt technology from Devastator, Shockwave willingly relinquished leadership to Megatron.

Megatron and the Combaticons fought Optimus Prime and the Protectobots in a simulated battle in a computer game. Athough Megatron cheated by using the program's "back door", he still lost to Optimus, who was forced to compromise his principles in order to win. Because Prime knew he would not have endangered innocents in a real life battle, he forfeited the match and was destroyed.

Although Megatron could not have known, Ethan Zachary had made a copy of Optimus's mind before his termination. Still, he suspected such an event, and that, together with the knowledge that he hadn't kill Optimus personally, slowly ate at his sanity. After a battle with the Predacons, Megatron appeared to regain his sanity, only to go completely over the edge when Shockwave revealed that he had practically duplicated himself by copying his mind to disk. Desperate to escape the situation, Megatron stepped onto the active space bridge and blew it up with his fusion cannon.

Although he was not heard from again for years, Megatron was actually healing on Cybertron, out of sight of anyone noteable. One day, he saw an Autobot attacking a Decepticon and instinctively destroyed the Autobot. His sanity was apparently restored for the most part. Driven by the thought of revenge, Megatron captured Ratchet and forced him to repair Starscream. Ratchet doublecrossed him and also repaired Grimlock, Bumblebee, and Jazz. All four Autobots attacked Megatron after Starscream left, but were unable to beat him. Ratchet teleported explosives planted on board the Ark to Megatron's base seconds before detonation. The resulting explosion pushed both of them into a strange dimensional rift. They were eventually pulled out, but were merged together by the explosion. Physically separated by Fixit, but still mentally linked, they were both placed on life support; Fixit believed that now, neither could live without the other.

Meanwhile, a Galvatron from an alternate universe had defeated the Autobots in his timeline and ruled North America. The Unicron from the "main" universe sent three robots - Hook, Line, and Sinker - into this universe to capture Galvatron. They succeeded, and brought Galvatron back.

After Grimlock discovered the incredible healing properties of Nucleon, he had it pumped into the Autobot life support chambers in the Ark, inadvertantly repairing Megatron as well. Megatron reawakended after the Ark was stolen by Shockwave and Starscream following the attack of Unicron. He met up with the alternate-reality Galvatron, with whom he eventually teamed up with against Shockwave. Meanwhile, Ratchet (who was able to see through Megatron's eyes and vice-versa) deflected a shot from Starscream, which ignited the Nucleon fuel, damaging the Ark and sending it once again plummeting into the Earth. This time, it crashed in northern Canada, where Galvatron reactivated (insane) and was promptly tossed into the icy waters by Fortress Maximus. Megatron, on the other hand, was able to repair himself over the next several years and attacked Cobra at Destro's castle after mistaking it for another Decepticon. Cobra Commander offered Megatron a deal: he would provide the means to rebuild and upgrade Megatron's body in return for Cybertron technology. Megatron agreed, and was rebuilt into the tank-based Generation-2 Megatron (not the official name), outfitted with an experimental rail gun invented by Dr. Biggles-Jones. Several Autobots were sent to stop him, but only one survived after Fortress Maximus was forced to throw himself into the Ark's reactor in order to destroy the ship. Megatron escaped unscathed.

Eventually, Megatron took leadership of the Decepticons back after killing Bludgeon in one-on-one combat. He then obtained the Creation Matrix after nearly destroying Optimus, and through it, created Rotor Force and the Laser Rods. After almost being killed himself in battle against Jhiaxus, Megatron agreed to a temporary truce with the Autobots until the defeat of the rogue Cybertronians. Jhiaxus's troops were defeated, and most of the Transformers survived. This was in no small part thanks to Megatron's selfless efforts in helping Optimus "defeat" the Matrix-powered Starscream, test the element rheanimum, and take it to the Earthbound Transformers. However, the Cybertronians remained mostly intact, so it remains to be seen whether or not Megatron will consider continuing the alliance.

Comic Bio (UK):

In addition to the information given in the US comic bio, the following applies to the UK comic continuity:

Megatron was originally chief gladiator of the city state of Tarn, which was ruled by Shockwave. However, when Tarn and Vos destroyed each other, he united the survivors to become the first Decepticons.

A clone of Megatron was built in 1987 by Straxus, who was in a life-support bubble following a battle with Blaster. Straxus transferred himself to this body when he failed to possess the real Megatron. This clone, believing he was the genuine article, resurfaced on Earth in London. He then fought alongside Galvatron in the Time Wars, but was ultimately destroyed when he returned to Cybertron and came face-to-face with the real Megatron.

Cartoon Bio (Japan):

In addition to the information given in the US cartoon bio, the following applies to the Japanese cartoon continuity:

Presumably through the power of the mysterious Dark Nova, Megatron was eventually resurrected. After being defeated by the Cybertrons, Megatron was recreated into Super Megatron, who transformed into a flying cannon. Still later, Super Megatron was again defeated, and was this time changed into Ultra Megatron. Finally, Dark Nova took matters into his own hands and merged with Ultra Megatron's body, forming the being Star Giant. Star Giant was eventually destroyed by the Cybertrons.
