Transformers Universe Autobot

Grimlock

Nickname: Grimmy

Allegiance: Autobot

Sub-Group: Dinobot

Function: Dinobot Commander

First Comic Appearance: Transformers #4

"Among the winners, there is no room for the weak."

Profile: The most fearsome and powerful of the Dinobots, Grimlock would gladly usurp Optimus Prime's role as Autobot Commander if he thought he could get away with it. For now, he's happy to tear into the enemy Decepticons whenever he can and wait for a more opportune moment to try for the leadership. He can be cold and merciless, and shows contempt for those he views as weak, such as humans and even some fellow Autobots. But he is a valiant warrior and his actions command respect from all who are witness to them, both friend and foe.

Abilities: Grimlock's strength is second only to Optimus Prime's, and even that is arguable. In Dinobot mode he can use his powerful jaws to snap in two virtually anything that comes between them- from a 4-foot diameter steel cable to a Decepticon leg. In Autobot mode he wields an energo-sword, which can slice a 2-foot thick concrete wall with one sweep of its crackling blade. He also uses a double-barreled self-propelled rocket launcher.

Weaknesses: Other than arrogance and lack of speed, Grimlock has no significant weaknesses.

Undisputed leader of the powerful Dinobots, Grimlock has shown himself to be a born warrior if there ever was one. Able to transform between robot and tyrannosaurus mode, he is one of the more powerful Autobots ever.

Cartoon Bio (US):

Facinated by Earth's dinosaurs, Wheeljack was inspired to build Autobots able to transform into the giant behemoths. Using holograms of museum skeletons from Hound, he and Ratchet were able to successfully construct three Dinobots: Grimlock, Slag, and Sludge. Grimlock immediately took command, being the most powerful fighter of the three. Initially incredibly stupid, Grimlock and the other Dinobots had their intelligences boosted somewhat before being allowed into their first engagement with the Decepticons. Megatron, disabled temporarily by Wheeljack's gyro inhibitor shell, watched helplessly while his troops were routed. Soon after, Megatron convinced the three original Dinobots to join him against Prime. When Optimus, after being defeated by them, saved Grimlock's life, the Dinobot leader rejected the Decepticons. Although not always a model soldier, Grimlock has remained a loyal Autobot ever since.

In 2006, Grimlock was accidentally fused with incredible intelligence, which allowed him to create the Technobots. The intelligence was lost as a result. Around this time, Grimlock also deactivated Primacron's energy creature, who threatened the galaxy.

Cartoon Bio (Japan):

In addition to what happened in US Cartoon Continuity, Grimlock played a minor role in defending Seibertron during Galvatron's first strike on Seibertron. Neither Grimlock or any of the Dinobots have been seen since that battle

Comic Bio (US):

Originally from Cybertron, Grimlock and his Dinobots were revived by the Ark 4 million years ago (and modified to resemble dinosaurs in the Savage Land) to combat Shockwave. Although Shockwave was winning, the Dinobots managed to trap him (and themselves) under several tons of rock and tar. After Shockwave escaped, Ratchet freed the Dinobots to fight him free the Autobots. Megatron easily beat the Dinobots, but then fell off a cliff to disappear for several months.

When Optimus Prime ordered a diversionary attack on a temporary Decepticon base, Grimlock (with his Dinobots) left in disgust. They returned months later with the intention of taking command of the then-leaderless Autobots. Trypticon attacked the Ark, making short work of the Autobots, while Grimlock watched impassively. However, when Trypticon threatened to kill a human who had demonstated courage earlier, Grimlock lept into the fight. The Dinobots joined in immediately and forced Ratbat, who was monitoring the situation, to recall Trypticon due to his skyrocketing energy expenditure and rising damage. The Autobots unanimously proclaimed Grimlock Autobot Leader.

Power soon corrupted Grimlock, however, and he ordered the Autobots to leave Earth once the Ark was repaired. Blaster and Goldbug deserted in protest of his leadership, and Grimlock soon became obsessed with punishing them for mutiny. [The UK comic has a subplot at this point called Ancient Relics, in which Grimlock battles Megatron in London.]

Blaster was captured when Grimlock offers the lives of several human children in exchange for him. Goldbug, in the meanwhile, mets up with Fortress Maximus, who sympathized with him and offered to fight Grimlock for the leadership. Realizing how damaged Fortress Maximus was in his fight with Shockwave, Goldbug convinced Blaster to fight in his place. With the Ark and the Steelhaven landed on the Earth's moon, the two parties gathered to watch Grimlock and Blaster duel. The fight was so ferocious that the two combatants soon tossed themselves (and each other) out of sight of the others. At this point, Decepticons, led by Ratbat, attacked the spectators.

Blaster and Grimlock eventually paused long enough to see the attack and by working together, were able to push the Decepticons back. Grimlock apologized for his obssessive behavior and didn't complain when Optimus returned from the dead to take back the leadership.

During the Underbase incident, Grimlock was used by Starscream as a shield and was shot by the combined firepower of the Decepticon Pretenders (ouch). Ratchet was eventually able to repair him using one of Megatron's experimental Pretender shells, but Grimlock was still not powerful enough to defeat either Megatron or Thunderwing in personal combat. In an incident involving several new Decepticon Pretenders, Grimlock was transported to Cybertron's underground and was forced to fight in the vicinity of the sleeping Primus. A shot ricocheted off of him onto Primus, waking him and alerting Unicron to his presence. Grimlock eventually joined the other Autobots in the Sol system and ceased using his Pretender shell.

Depressed by the deactivation of the Dinobots, Grimlock became determined to find a miracle cure for them. He journeyed to a planet where a new fuel source, Nucleon, was rumored to be able to repair whatever it is used in. Although warned of possible side effects, Grimlock nonetheless used it on himself first, then on the Dinobots. Seeing no harm, Grimlock returned to the Ark, only to find it abandoned because Primus had teleported the active occupants to Cybertron. The Nucleon was pumped into all the life support chambers in the Ark, including Megatron's (the Dinobots were unaware he was there).

Following the battle with Unicron, Optimus made it his dying wish to have Grimlock secede him as leader (shocking Prowl, who believed he was next in line). Grimlock agreed and immediately went off with the Dinobots to scout the area in search of the Ark, which had been stolen by Shockwave and Starscream. They met up with Hi-Q, who was being pursued by some powerful and ancient Cybertronian creatures. Grimlock's systems froze up because of the Nucleon, forcing the Dinobots to fight a standing defensive battle. Hi-Q determined that the Nucleon had locked his systems for the purpose of reconfiguring his energy systems. Realizing time was of the essence, Hi-Q used his Powermaster abilities and accelerated the process in Grimlock. The Dinobot emerged from this more powerful than ever before, but no longer possessed the ability to transform into his T-Rex mode.

The Decepticons doublecrossed the Autobots, sabotaging their ships and heading for the planet Klo. Grimlock, however, had already taken the precaution of locating replacement ships and planting a homing signal on one of the Decepticon ships. Unfortunately for him, the bug was found and a trap was laid for them at Klo. Grimlock escaped the trap with several others, but most of the Autobots were decimated. Hi-Q, recreated as Optimus Prime by the Last Autobot, arrived at this point, and their combined attack, along with the Last Autobot's ability to resurrect dead Transformers, caused Bludgeon to back down. Grimlock again returned command to Prime.

Years later, Grimlock (no longer in possession of his Pretender shell and able to transform) discovered a series of planets in the galaxy that had been conquered and terraformed by Transformers. He led a series of attacks which resulted in numerous casualties for the opposition, but called in Prime for reinforcements once he found out the sheer size of the new enemy's forces. Although Grimlock disobeyed orders and tried to sneak aboard the Cybertronian flagship Twilight, Prime regarded Grimlock as a trusted second-in-command. When Optimus insisted on meeting with Megatron alone, it was Grimlock who organized the team which kept Megatron from killing Prime. Later, when Optimus and Megatron left for space to get the Matrix, Grimlock was considered by many to be in command over Razorclaw's objections. Grimlock's charisma and skill, apparently, convinced some of the new Decepticons to switch sides during the battle against the Swarm.

Comic Bio (UK):

In addition to the US Comic Continuity, the following events occurred:

While Blaster and Goldbug were escaping the Autobot patrols sent after them, Blades located a Transformer signal in the ancient Roman sewers beneath London. Believing it was the errant Autobots, Grimlock took his newly-repaired friend Centurion to Europe. There, instead of Blaster and Goldbug, he discovered what he believed was Megatron (but was actually Straxus's mind in a duplicate of Megatron's body). A fierce battle ensued, during which Action Force saved Grimlock's life. Returning the favour, Grimlock saved several members from being crushed by Megatron. The fight culminated in Centurion and Megatron being caught in an enormous explosion and falling into the Thames river.
